Is buying reps legal and safe? What you should know

It's almost everyone's first question. Here's an honest, no-nonsense explanation.

Legality

A replica reproduces a registered trademark without the owner's permission, so it infringes their rights. What that means for someone buying for personal use depends on the country. In many, buyers aren't usually prosecuted, but not being prosecuted doesn't make it legal, and the consequences vary:

• Customs can detain and destroy the parcel. In the EU that applies to small parcels too, and you lose what you paid.
• Reselling replicas is a crime almost everywhere.
• Some countries fine the buyer too. Check your own country's law.
